"HAT ALL SHOT TO PICES . . . IT WAS A BLOODY BATTLE" (CIVIL WAR--NEW YORK.) [Fernald], George W. Letter describing Bull Run, and enclosing a bit of the hat which was shot off his head. Autograph Letter Signed "Cozen George" to cousin George Fernald of New York City. 2 pages, 7 3/4 x 5 inches, on patriotic "Commissioners to Treat with Jeff. Davis & Co." letterhead; partial separations at folds, minor wear and foxing, lacking integral blank. With original stamped and postmarked patriotic cover, and a piece of black felt, 3 1/4 x 2 1/2 inches as described in letter. Georgetown, DC, 24 July 1861

Additional Details

George Washington Fernald or Furnald (1840-1918) was a corporal in the 82nd New York Infantry. "I was in that battle at Bull's Run, but thank God I did not get wounded allthough I got hat all shot to pices, and I will send you a small piece of it for you to keep to remember the 21 of July by, for it was a bloody battle. . . . You must not think that wee was whiped, for we got three of there masked batterys, but our amunition gave out, an so we had to retreat. I should think there was about 1500 or 2000 killed and wounded, but the enemy lost more than wee did."
